Unsettling Dreams: An Analysis of The Metamorphosis Through his essay â€Å"Competing Theories of Identity in The Metamorphosis†, Kevin W. Sweeny explores three different concepts of identity that are brought to light in Franz Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis. While our social role and conscious mind help establish our character, ultimately our material body determines how we identify, to ourselves and the general public. Through The Metamorphosis, Kafka explores how losing control of the body can conflict the mind, and decimate social status, as well as alter the very essence of one’s identity. When he awakes one morning to find his human body replaced with that of a bug in Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa does not†¦show more content†¦Through the novella, Gregor struggles with the separation of mind from body. His body repeatedly rejects what his mind wants, as demonstrated when his sister left Gregor a bowl of fresh milk with li ttle pieces of bread floating in it. He discovers that he â€Å"[doesn’t] like the milk at all, although if used to be his favorite drink† (16), and that he now has a taste for half-rotten vegetables and expired cheese. These food choices are also used to further emphasize the loss of Gregor’s human identity, as no average person would voluntarily choose rotten over fresh food. It also allows insight into how he will soon be viewed by his family. A peer or superior would never be offered anything less than the most fresh, nourishing food available; days-old and rotting food is typically only given to those seen as inferior. He also finds great comfort underneath the couch in his room, even though he cannot fit entirely beneath it. This suggests the very stereotypical desire of a bug to be in a confined, dark space; a characteristic that is more often associated with a phobia than a desire among the human population. Gregor also uses a bed sheet to reveal and conceal himself. It is something that â€Å"fell off by itself† (6) with ease in the beginning of the story to reveal his bug body. | An Ethical Dilemma | | Mary Ryan 8/27/2012 | Ethical dilemmas come up often within the workplace and can be difficult to handle when an employee needs to choose between what’s right and what’s wrong based on their own morals and principals. Handling ethical issues should be pursued in a steady and cautious approach towards matters that can potentially be dangerous or illegal. (Mayhew) One ethical dilemma that I was caught in the middle of left me in a position where I was almost forced into firing a person because of their sexual orientation. I felt this was an unethical request, and really made me think twice about the company I was working for and representing. Later on that week when I seen Sally, she told me that she thought the owner had a problem with her. I told Sally what happened and that I refused to fire her because I feel her sexual orientation is her business, and should not affect her employment. After our heated conversation, my attitude towards the owner had changed and I really did not have much respect left for her. Sally stayed employed for a while, but put up with a lot of unfair treatment from the owner. The owner really had me upset about this issue, and I felt I needed to stand up for Sally. I started doing some research on the issue of sexual orientation and finding out if it was illegal or not to discriminate against this issue. I was a bit surprised to find that it is not illegal, here in Michigan, to fire someone based on their se xuality. Today it is perfectly legal to fire; refuse to hire or refuse to promote someone because an employer thinks that a person is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. It is also legal to deny these people rental housing, or refuse to serve them in stores, restaurants and other public accommodations. They are not offered any kind of protection under the state law and have very few options when dealing with discriminatory actions. The Cold War, coined by Bernard Baruch, would be used to describe the period between 1945 and 1991, where tensions between the East and West increased. Reasons for the Cold War have been heavily debated, orthodox theories, look at Soviet aggression as dictating American policy, yet this is disputed by revisionist, who attribute more blame to America. However, post revisionism is possibly better, looking to other factors rather than blaming one state, looking mostly at leadership and the breakdown of diplomacy. Orthodox views came from America and the West, there is a clear bias to ensure there is innocence of America. Furthermore, I feel that it will also help me to utilize suggestions of the employees in an effective manner, which will create positiv e impact on the fulfillment of my leadership development plan objectives. I also feel that it will help me to enhance the motivational level of the employees. Therefore, it will to achieve attainable objectives of my personal and professional development plan. Situational leadership framework: As per the article by Huffman et al. (2014) situational leadership is based upon two continuums namely arousal and supervision. Thus, I believe it will help me to identify the best possible way to mix these two factors in my leadership style so that it can able to fulfill my leadership gaps. For instance, I will have to evaluate the knowledge and skill level of all the employees. I believe it will help me to determine the required amount of supervision is required to enhance the effectiveness of the operational process at the optimum level. Thus, it will help me to reduce the possibility of miscommunication and lack of coordination at the workplace. Therefore, it will help to develop positive working atmosphere (Carrillo Chinowsky, 2013). Thus, it eventually will help my leadership style to deal effectively with the negativity. Influence of national and organizational cultures and social practices on the current leadership perspectives: As mentioned in the article by Moore (2014) national and organizational culture is important factors that can create major impact on the effectiveness of the leadership style. For that reason, I believe that analysis of culture will help to achieve my PPDP objectives in an appropriate manner. Now, as I have associated with a startup organization, I will focus only on establishment of the organization within the country firmly. Therefore, I feel that my PPDP will only have to focus on the Australian market and organizational culture. Now, many studies have identified that Australian business culture is very straightforward (Pedler, Burgoyne Boydell, 2013). Therefore, my PPDP plan will have to include utilization of clear communication technique. Furthermore, I also have to maintain punctuality so that it can able to create a positive vibe in the organization. I have also identified that present Australian business culture is focusing more on the maintenance of social responsibility. For that reason, my PPDP will have to focus on the effective utilization of CSR strategies so that it can able to gain competitive advantage in the market. I also feel that maintenance of CSR can create positive working environment. Therefore, it can create positive impact on the elimination of negativity from the workplace. Many studies have mentioned that Australia utilize collaborative business culture (Bolea Atwater, 2014). As a result, it usually takes more time in implementing any decision. Therefore, I believe it will help me to utilize democratic leadership style effectively. I also feel that it will provide me enough opportunity to consider opinion of all the employees before implementing any decision. Thus, it helps to create positive impact on the effectiveness of the leadership development perspectives (Fullan, 2014). I think that effective evaluation of Australian culture will help me to develop skills in maintaining proper relationship with all the stakeholders of the organization. Thus, it will help to fulfill the attainable PPDP objective (Joyce, 2015). Conclusion: The above analysis highlighted the fact that leadership development heavily depends on many factors that organizations will have to utilize effectively. Thus, I believe proper utilization of PPDP requires in-depth knowledge about several perspectives of leadership. Firstly, it will have to evaluate strengths and weakness of an individual as a leader. Then it will have to develop a plan that can counter all the weaknesses of a leader in en effective manner. Thus, it requires implementation of systemic procedure. Now, I have just started as a leader, for that reason I have consider a five year time for the effective utilization of PPDP to eliminate all the negatives aspects from my leadership style.
